Ta-2.5W Tantalum-Tungsten Sheet, Plate, Strip and Foil to ASTM B708

UNS R05252 is Ta-2.5W, tantalum alloyed with about 2.5% tungsten, supplied to ASTM B708 / ASME SB708 with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates.
The tungsten makes R05252 about a third stronger than unalloyed tantalum, while it keeps almost the same corrosion resistance and still forms and welds well. Why Choose Ta-2.5W Sheet?
Corrosion Resistance of R05252
Ta-2.5W behaves almost the same as unalloyed tantalum. It resists hot hydrochloric, sulphuric (below about 175 °C) and nitric acids, wet chlorine, bromine and chloride salts. Like all tantalum, it is not suitable for hydrofluoric acid and fluorides, fuming sulphuric acid (free SO3) or hot strong alkalis, and it can absorb hydrogen and become brittle if coupled to more active metals. Weight (kg) = Length (m) × Width (m) × Thickness (mm) × 16.7
For example, a 1000 mm × 500 mm × 1 mm R05252 sheet weighs about 1 × 0.5 × 1 × 16.7 = 8.4 kg, roughly twice the weight of the same sheet in steel.

What is tantalum UNS R05252 sheet?
UNS R05252 is Ta-2.5W, a tantalum alloy with about 2.0–3.5% tungsten. It is supplied as sheet, plate, strip and foil to ASTM B708 / ASME SB708, and as tube to ASTM B521.
What is the difference between R05252 and R05200 sheet?
R05200 is unalloyed tantalum. R05252 adds about 2.5% tungsten, which raises the minimum tensile strength to about 276 MPa while keeping almost the same corrosion resistance and good formability.
When should I choose Ta-2.5W instead of Ta-10W?
Choose Ta-2.5W when pure tantalum is too soft but you still need easy forming and welding, for example in linings, formed parts and strip for welded tube. Ta-10W (R05255) is much stronger but harder to form, and suits high-strength or high-temperature parts.
Can R05252 be used for tantalum-lined tubesheets?
Yes. Ta-2.5W sheet can be used for tantalum linings and cladding on tubesheets, vessels and columns, where its extra strength allows thinner tantalum than unalloyed R05200. Send the tubesheet drawing and thickness for a quote.
What thicknesses of R05252 sheet are available?
Typically foil and strip from about 0.05 mm to 0.5 mm, and sheet and plate from 0.5 mm to about 6 mm, with 1 mm and 2 mm the most common. Other sizes and cut blanks can be quoted on request.
