Zirconium 702 & 705 Sheets and Plates to ASTM B551 / ASME SB551
Dinesh Tube India supplies zirconium sheets, plates and strip from Mumbai to chemical-plant fabricators, urea and acetic-acid plant owners, heat-exchanger makers and vessel shops. We supply Zirconium 702 (UNS R60702), the commercially pure grade, and Zirconium 705 (UNS R60705), the stronger niobium-alloyed grade, to ASTM B551 / ASME SB551, in full sheets and plates or cut sizes, with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates.
Zirconium is chosen where stainless steels and nickel alloys corrode too fast, especially in hot hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid below about 70%, and acetic, formic and nitric acids. For zirconium tubes, see our zirconium tubes page.
Why Zirconium Sheet & Plate?
Zirconium is a reactive metal that instantly forms a dense, self-healing oxide film. That film gives it outstanding resistance to many strong acids and alkalis at temperatures where stainless steels fail. Industrial zirconium contains up to 4.5% hafnium, which occurs naturally with zirconium and does not affect corrosion resistance.
- Zr 702 (R60702): commercially pure; the standard grade for corrosion service, linings and heat exchangers
- Zr 705 (R60705): alloyed with 2–3% niobium; higher strength and better formability for vessel parts, fasteners and springs
- Zr 704 (R60704): tin, iron and chromium bearing grade, used less often
Nuclear-grade zirconium alloys (Zircaloy-2 / Zircaloy-4, UNS R60802 / R60804) are hafnium-free reactor materials made to different specifications. They are not the same as industrial Zr 702 and are not covered on this page.

Zirconium Sheet & Plate Applications
Zirconium Sheets & Plates: FAQs
Which standard covers zirconium sheet and plate?
ASTM B551 / B551M (ASME SB551) covers zirconium and zirconium alloy strip, sheet and plate. The common grades are Zr 702 (UNS R60702), Zr 704 (R60704) and Zr 705 (R60705).
What is the difference between zirconium 702 and 705?
Zr 702 is commercially pure zirconium and the standard grade for corrosion service. Zr 705 is alloyed with 2–3% niobium, giving much higher strength (about 552 MPa tensile minimum versus 379 MPa) and better formability, with similar corrosion resistance in most media.
Is industrial zirconium the same as nuclear Zircaloy?
No. Industrial Zr 702 and 705 contain up to 4.5% hafnium, which does not affect chemical corrosion resistance. Nuclear Zircaloy-2 and Zircaloy-4 are hafnium-free reactor alloys made to different specifications.
Where is zirconium not suitable?
Zirconium is attacked by hydrofluoric acid and fluoride-bearing media, by hydrochloric acid containing ferric or cupric ions, by wet chlorine and by sulphuric acid above about 70%. In those services, tantalum, titanium or nickel alloys may be better choices.
Why is zirconium used in urea plants?
Zirconium resists the hot, corrosive ammonium carbamate solutions in urea strippers and high-pressure sections far better than stainless steels, so it is widely used for stripper tubes, linings and ferrules.
Can zirconium sheets be welded?
Yes, by GTAW with full inert-gas shielding, including trailing and back purge. Any contact with air at welding temperature absorbs oxygen and nitrogen and makes the weld brittle. Clean, iron-free fabrication conditions are essential.
What is the price of zirconium plate?
The price depends on grade, thickness, size, quantity and mill, and is much higher than stainless steel because of zirconium's processing cost. Send your requirement to kamlesh@dineshtube-india.com or call +91 83559 10913 for a current quote.
Which certificates come with zirconium sheets and plates?
Every supply comes with an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate showing heat number, chemical analysis and mechanical properties to ASTM B551. EN 10204 3.2 certificates and third-party inspection can be arranged on request.
