These are electric-resistance-welded (ERW) round, square and rectangular tubes formed from A606 Type 4 high-strength low-alloy weathering steel strip, so the finished tube weathers to the same rust-brown patina as Corten sheet.

Important: ASTM A606 is a specification for sheet and strip, not for tubes. An "A606 tube" is a welded tube made from A606-certified strip, and the mill certificate covers the strip. What Is ASTM A606 Type 4?

ASTM A606 / A606M covers high-strength low-alloy, hot-rolled and cold-rolled sheet and strip with improved atmospheric corrosion resistance, in cut lengths or coils, for structural and other applications. It has two types:

Type 2: contains at least 0.20% copper, giving roughly twice the atmospheric corrosion resistance of plain carbon steel
Type 4: enhanced weathering steel with a corrosion-resistance index of at least 6.0 (ASTM G101), the Corten-type grade used for unpainted tube

Formed into ERW tube, A606 Type 4 gives a light, unpainted, rust-finish section for railings, frames and furniture. It is not stainless steel and is not intended for pressure, marine immersion or chemical service.

ASTM A606 sets only a few chemistry limits; mills add copper, chromium, nickel and phosphorus to meet the Type 4 corrosion index. The mill certificate shows the actual analysis. Check the current A606 / A606M edition for governing values.

These are strip properties. Cold forming and welding into tube changes yield strength slightly; ask for tube test results if your design depends on them.

What is ASTM A606 Type 4?

ASTM A606 Type 4 is a high-strength low-alloy weathering steel supplied as hot-rolled or cold-rolled sheet and strip. It must have a corrosion-resistance index of at least 6.0 under ASTM G101, so it forms a protective Corten-type patina outdoors.

Is there an ASTM A606 tube specification?

No. ASTM A606 covers sheet and strip only. "A606 tubes" are ERW tubes formed and welded from A606-certified strip, and the mill certificate covers the strip. For tubing certified to a structural tube standard, order ASTM A847.

What is the difference between A606 Type 2 and Type 4?

Type 2 contains at least 0.20% copper and gives roughly twice the atmospheric corrosion resistance of plain carbon steel. Type 4 is an enhanced weathering steel with a G101 corrosion index of at least 6.0, and is the grade used for unpainted Corten-look tubes.

What is the yield strength of ASTM A606?

For hot-rolled, as-rolled cut lengths the minimum is 345 MPa (50 ksi) yield and 485 MPa (70 ksi) tensile. For hot-rolled coils and for annealed, normalised or cold-rolled strip the minimum is 310 MPa (45 ksi) yield and 450 MPa (65 ksi) tensile. Elongation is 22% minimum.

What is the difference between A606 and A847 Corten tubes?

A606 is a strip specification, so A606 tubes rely on the strip certificate. A847 is a tube specification for cold-formed HSLA weathering structural tubing, with properties tested on the finished tube. Use A847 for load-bearing structures and A606 tubes for light frames, railings and furniture.

Are A606 seamless tubes available?

No. Because A606 is a sheet and strip steel, A606 tubes are always welded (ERW). For seamless Corten-type tubes, see ASTM A423 Grade 1, which is used mainly in air preheaters.

Do A606 Corten tubes rust inside?

They can if water gets in and cannot drain. Seal tube ends with caps or welded plates, or drill drain holes at low points, so the inside does not stay wet.

Which certificates come with A606 Corten tubes?
