What Is ASTM A847?

ASTM A847 / A847M covers cold-formed welded and seamless HSLA structural tubing in round, square, rectangular and special shapes, for welded, riveted or bolted construction of bridges, buildings and other structures that need high strength and improved resistance to atmospheric corrosion. It works like a weathering-steel counterpart to carbon steel structural tubing to ASTM A500.

The steel has a minimum 0.20% copper and controlled phosphorus, so outdoors it forms a tight protective patina like Corten plate. This lets bare, unpainted frames match A588 or A242 plate in the same structure. A847 is not stainless steel and is not intended for chemical, buried or continuously wet service.

Mills add other elements such as Cr, Ni and Si to reach the required atmospheric corrosion resistance; the mill certificate shows the full analysis. Check the current ASTM A847 / A847M edition for governing limits.

Detail A847 frames so that water drains and surfaces dry out, and seal or drain closed hollow sections. Do not use bare weathering steel in coastal splash zones or where it stays wet.

What is ASTM A847 tubing?

ASTM A847 / A847M covers cold-formed welded and seamless high-strength low-alloy structural tubing with improved atmospheric corrosion resistance. In practice it is Corten-type weathering steel in round, square and rectangular hollow sections, used for bridges, buildings and architectural structures.

What is the difference between ASTM A847 and A500?

Both cover cold-formed structural tubing. A500 is carbon steel and is normally painted or galvanised. A847 is a high-strength low-alloy weathering steel with at least 0.20% copper, a minimum yield of 345 MPa and improved atmospheric corrosion resistance, so it can often be left unpainted outdoors.

What is the difference between ASTM A847 and A423?

A847 is structural tubing for frames, bridges and architecture. A423 covers low-alloy heat-transfer tubes, and A423 Grade 1 is mainly used in the cold end of boiler air preheaters. Both are Corten-type steels, but they are made and tested for different purposes.

What are the mechanical properties of ASTM A847?

ASTM A847 tubing has a minimum yield strength of 345 MPa (50,000 psi), a minimum tensile strength of 485 MPa (70,000 psi) and a minimum elongation of 19% in 50 mm.

Can ASTM A847 tubes be left unpainted?

Yes, in most outdoor atmospheres. Like Corten plate, A847 forms a protective patina after repeated wetting and drying. Avoid bare weathering steel in coastal splash zones, where water collects, in soil, and where de-icing salts are used. Closed hollow sections should be sealed or drained so the inside does not stay wet.

Which plate grades match A847 tubes in a structure?

A847 tubes are usually combined with ASTM A588 or ASTM A242 weathering steel plate, or EN S355J2W, so that the whole structure weathers to the same colour. See our Corten steel plates page for those grades.
