What Is API 5L Gr B Pipe?

API 5L is the American Petroleum Institute specification for line pipe: seamless and welded steel pipe for carrying oil, gas and water in pipelines. Its international equivalent is ISO 3183. Grade B (ISO grade L245) is the basic carbon steel grade, with a minimum yield strength of 245 MPa (35,500 psi) and a minimum tensile strength of 415 MPa (60,200 psi).

Grade B is ordered at one of two product specification levels. PSL1 is the standard quality. PSL2 adds tighter chemistry, a maximum as well as minimum strength, and mandatory Charpy impact testing. In PSL2 the grade is written with a delivery-condition letter: BR (as-rolled), BN (normalised), BQ (quenched and tempered) or BM (thermomechanically rolled, for welded pipe).

Weight %. Limits on Nb, V and Ti and on Cu, Ni, Cr and Mo also apply; a 0.05% Mn increase is allowed for each 0.01% below the carbon maximum, up to the limit in API 5L.

Minimum elongation is calculated from the specimen area and tensile strength by the API 5L formula. PSL2 pipe is also Charpy impact tested on the pipe body (and the weld of welded pipe); test temperature and energy follow API 5L or the purchase order.

Every length of API 5L pipe, PSL1 or PSL2, is hydrostatically tested at the mill. PSL2 is normally specified for high-pressure, sour-service or offshore lines; PSL1 is common for water, utility and low-pressure lines.

What is the difference between API 5L Gr B PSL1 and PSL2?

PSL1 Gr B has minimum strength requirements only, with carbon up to 0.28% (seamless). PSL2 Gr B, written as BR, BN, BQ or BM, has lower carbon, phosphorus and sulphur limits, a carbon equivalent limit, a maximum yield of 450 MPa and tensile of 655 MPa, and mandatory Charpy impact testing.

What is the yield strength of API 5L Gr B?

The minimum yield strength is 245 MPa (35,500 psi) for both PSL1 and PSL2. PSL2 also sets a maximum yield of 450 MPa and a maximum yield-to-tensile ratio of 0.93. The minimum tensile strength is 415 MPa (60,200 psi).

Is API 5L Gr B the same as ASTM A106 Gr B?

No, but they are very similar. Both have a minimum tensile strength of 415 MPa and similar chemistry. A106 Gr B is seamless pipe for high-temperature process service, while API 5L Gr B is line pipe made seamless or welded. Seamless pipe is often triple certified to API 5L Gr B, A106 Gr B and A53 Gr B.

What does BR, BN, BQ and BM mean in API 5L?

These are PSL2 Grade B designations, where the letter shows the delivery condition: R is as-rolled, N is normalised (or normalising rolled), Q is quenched and tempered, and M is thermomechanically rolled, which applies to welded pipe. The ISO equivalents are L245R, L245N, L245Q and L245M.

Is API 5L Gr B available in ERW and SAW?

Yes. API 5L Gr B is made seamless, ERW / HFW, LSAW (straight seam) and SSAW (spiral seam). Seamless and ERW cover the smaller sizes, typically up to 24 in., while LSAW and SSAW are used for large-diameter pipe.
