What Is ASTM A106 Grade B?

ASTM A106/A106M is the standard specification for seamless carbon steel pipe for high-temperature service, adopted by ASME as SA106. It covers pipe from NPS 1/8 to NPS 48 in Grades A, B and C, with dimensions to ASME B36.10. Grade B is the workhorse grade: a minimum tensile strength of 415 MPa, a minimum silicon content for good high-temperature behaviour, and suitability for bending, flanging and welding.

A106 Gr B is the default carbon steel pipe in ASME B31.1 power piping and B31.3 process piping, typically used from about −29 °C up to 425 °C. For hotter lines, designers move to alloy steel pipe (A335 P11, P22); for colder lines, to A333 Gr 6 low-temperature pipe.

Heat Treatment & Testing

Hot-finished A106 pipe needs no further heat treatment; cold-drawn pipe is heat treated after the final draw at 650 °C (1200 °F) or higher. Testing required by A106 and A530 includes:

  •   Chemical analysis (heat and product)
  •   Tensile test and bend or flattening test
  •   Hydrostatic test, or ultrasonic / eddy current NDE in its place
  •   Dimensional and visual inspection; PMI and third-party inspection on request

What is ASTM A106 Grade B material?

ASTM A106 Grade B is a seamless carbon steel pipe material for high-temperature service. It contains up to 0.30% carbon and 0.29–1.06% manganese, with at least 0.10% silicon, and has a minimum tensile strength of 415 MPa and yield strength of 240 MPa. ASME adopts it as SA106 Gr B. It is the most widely used pipe grade in refinery, power plant and process piping.

What is the difference between A106 Grade A, B and C?

The three grades differ in carbon content and strength. Grade A (0.25% C max) has a minimum tensile of 330 MPa, Grade B (0.30% C max) 415 MPa, and Grade C (0.35% C max) 485 MPa. Grade B is by far the most common; Grade C is used where higher strength is needed and Grade A where extra ductility for bending is wanted.

What is the maximum temperature for A106 Gr B pipe?

A106 Gr B is commonly used from about −29 °C up to around 425 °C. Above that, long-term exposure can cause graphitisation, so chrome-moly pipe such as ASTM A335 P11 or P22 is used. Below −29 °C, impact-tested ASTM A333 Gr 6 pipe is used instead.

Can A106 Gr B replace A53 Gr B?

Usually yes. Seamless A106 Gr B meets or exceeds the requirements of A53 Gr B, and pipe is commonly triple certified to A106 Gr B, A53 Gr B and API 5L Gr B. The reverse is not true: welded A53 pipe cannot be used where A106 is specified.

Is A106 Gr B pipe suitable for sour service?

Yes, when ordered to NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 for oil and gas, or NACE MR0103 for refineries. These limit hardness (usually 22 HRC maximum) and may add chemistry and test requirements. The NACE requirement must be stated on the order so the mill can certify to it.

What is the equivalent of ASTM A106 Gr B?

Close equivalents are EN 10216-2 P265GH, DIN 17175 St45.8 and JIS G3456 STPT410. They are similar in chemistry and strength but not identical, so check them against your design code before substituting.
