What Is API 5L X-Grade Line Pipe?
API 5L is the American Petroleum Institute specification for steel line pipe used to transport oil, gas and water in pipelines; its international equivalent is ISO 3183. The X grades are the high-strength grades, and the number after X is the minimum yield strength in ksi: API 5L X52 has a minimum yield of 52 ksi (360 MPa), X60 has 60 ksi and X70 has 70 ksi.
Higher-strength grades let a pipeline run at higher pressure, or use a thinner wall at the same pressure, which saves steel and welding time on long lines. Each grade can be ordered to one of two product specification levels: PSL1 for standard service, or PSL2 with tighter chemistry, impact testing and maximum strength limits for demanding pipelines.
API 5L X-Grade Yield & Tensile Strength
X80 is PSL2 only. PSL2 also limits the yield-to-tensile ratio to 0.93 maximum. Minimum elongation depends on grade and specimen size per API 5L.

For PSL2, a suffix shows the delivery condition, for example X52N (normalised), X65Q (quenched and tempered) or X70M (thermomechanically rolled). Sour-service pipe adds S (for example X52NS) and offshore pipe adds O.

What does the X number mean in API 5L X52?
The number after X is the minimum yield strength in thousands of psi (ksi). API 5L X52 has a minimum yield strength of 52,000 psi (360 MPa), X60 has 60,000 psi (415 MPa) and X70 has 70,000 psi (485 MPa). Higher grades allow thinner walls for the same operating pressure.
What is the difference between API 5L PSL1 and PSL2?
PSL1 is the standard quality level, with minimum strength requirements only. PSL2 adds tighter chemistry with carbon equivalent limits, a maximum as well as minimum yield and tensile strength, mandatory Charpy impact testing, and stricter non-destructive testing. PSL2 is normally specified for high-pressure, sour or offshore pipelines.
Which API 5L grades are available in PSL1 and PSL2?
Grades from L175 / A25 up to X70 are available in PSL1. PSL2 covers grades from BR (Grade B) up to X120. Grades above X70, such as X80, are made only to PSL2.
What is the difference between ERW, LSAW and SSAW line pipe?
ERW (HFW) pipe is formed from coil and welded by high-frequency electric resistance, typically up to 24 in. LSAW pipe is formed from plate with a straight submerged-arc weld, used for large-diameter, heavy-wall pipe. SSAW (HSAW) pipe has a spiral submerged-arc weld and is used for large-diameter, lower-pressure lines. Seamless pipe is usually chosen for smaller diameters and high-pressure service.
Is API 5L X52 the same as ISO 3183 L360?
Yes. ISO 3183 is the international version of API 5L. API grade X52 corresponds to ISO grade L360, where 360 is the minimum yield strength in MPa. Similarly, X42 is L290, X60 is L415, X65 is L450 and X70 is L485.
What coatings are available for API 5L line pipe?
Line pipe is supplied bare with a temporary varnish, or with external anti-corrosion coatings such as 3LPE (three-layer polyethylene), 3LPP, FBE (fusion-bonded epoxy) and coal tar enamel, and internal epoxy lining where needed. The coating is chosen by the pipeline operator based on soil, temperature and cathodic protection design.
